Kicking Off a New Partnership: Blackman Welcomes Team Rinnai

All photos included in this post and on our Facebook page were taken by Creepwalk Media

As a solid kickoff to the heating season, we proudly welcomed Rinnai into our portfolio of trade brands. To celebrate our new partnership and showcase their latest products, we co-hosted the Rinnai Kickoff Event; an evening of customer education, fine dining, and celebrity NFL appearances.

Rinnai: A History of Innovation and Comfort

Rinnai was founded in 1920 by Hidejiro Naito and Kanekichi Hayashi as a manufacturer of pressurized oil cooking stoves in Japan. However, by the early 1930’s, the company expanded focusing on gas cooking stoves, as well as range and space heaters. By 1964 the founders and their team had successfully engineered their products to heat home and commercial water systems safely and efficiently.

The organizations legacy of efficiency and quality certainly carries on today, as more than 2 million homes in North America have installed the companies Tankless Water Heaters.

Blackman and Rinnai: The Kickoff Event

Football fan… us too. When determining the best way to showcase Rinnai and their new product lineup to our top trade customers, we thought no better a way than with New York Jets legends Wesley Walker, Erik Coleman and Jets beat writer Rich Cimini.

The evening, which began with product information stations and refreshments, grew competitive as customers rushed to have their scorecard punched. This card, given out upon entrance, was punched after visiting each information station. After successfully filling out the card, customers were granted the ultimate reward of a signed football and photo opportunity with Jets legends Wesley Walker and Erik Coleman.

After presentations had concluded and customers had finished their final course, it was time for the Jets panel discussion. “Our recent Jets theme customer night was spectacular, working with Blackman and sponsor Rinnai was fantastic. Jets Legends Wesley Walker and Erik Colemen were personable and engaged. It was a fantastic night,” said Tony Palmisano, Horizon Consulting event organizer.

The Winning Touchdown: Event Success

“Thanks to the partnership with Blackman, Rinnai Tankless Water Heaters and Boilers are available to contractors across Long Island and New Jersey!  The Kick-off event in Babylon was the perfect way for Blackman to show their contractors the very best Rinnai has to offer,” said Jason Fitzsimmons, Rinnai Northeast Regional Sales Director.

Exploring the Infinite Possibilities of Infinity Drain

Exploring the Infinite Possibilities of Infinity Drain: An Outdoor Project Feature

When compared to that of a more traditional drainage system, homeowners and designers alike are quick to appreciate the elevated aesthetic and functionally offered by Infinity Drain. Their products, ranging from shower stalls to pool surrounds, can be as prominent or concealed as the space calls for.  This versatility allows designers and plumbers to make a collective decision on product type and placement.

To investigate the versatility of the Infinity Drain product, we visited a Hampton’s property undergoing a driveway renovation. “The vision for our driveway, which will be completely blacktop, was to introduce enhanced functionally and design. For the longest time, it was an overlooked facet of the property. By incorporating 5 rows of Infinity Drain systems, surrounded by 4 rows of brickwork, our 300ft blacktopped driveway will have a much more inviting look,” said the homeowner/ designer.

Typically, an outdoor Infinity Drain system is comprised of materials manufactured specifically for the project. However, the unique needs of this design called for the use of materials traditionally made for indoor use. By installing 3 S-AS 65 drains per row, making up a total of 5 rows, the drains were easily connected and look as if they are one solid piece. To ensure proper drainage, each system will also function as its own entity with one S-50 outlet per drain section.

This innovative design concept further exemplifies the versatility and functionality of the product. Infinity Drain, which proudly sources all materials and manufactures in the U.S., provides a fashion-forward and functional alternative to a traditional drainage system. These factors allow both home and commercial building owners to explore the infinite possibilities of water drainage.

The Supply House Branch Manager: Leading the Way

The Supply House Branch Manager: Leading the Way

Written by Francesca Messina

Sometimes, the industry you are destined to become a part of finds you. During the past five years, I have spent much time asking my colleagues how they became a part of this dynamic industry. I am fascinated with the stories of how they became who they are today. Furthermore, I am interested in where they see our industry going.

Many of these conversations have been shared with a local supply house branch manager over a cup of fresh brewed “counter coffee”. These men and women effectively serve and support the masses of plumbers, contractors, and trade professionals who frequent the busy sales counters of supply houses across the USA. This industry could not thrive without these branch managers; the relationships they have developed, the knowledge they have about the products we sell, and the business we are in.

Not only do these leaders maintain the daily operation of their business, coach their team, and stock the shelves; they also form valuable relationships with their customers.

Over the next few weeks, we will feature the stories of our Blackman Plumbing Supply Branch Managers. They are a unique group of people who make up the Blackman Plumbing Supply Family.

They take pride in what they do and above all, they believe in the POWER of the Trade!

To kick off our stories, we would like to introduce you to Mike Voulo, Branch Manager of Blackman Plumbing Supply Southampton, NY.

Mike Voulo started working at Blackman Plumbing Supply when he was 16 years old. He began sweeping the yard at our Medford, NY location. Having stepped away for a brief period to complete his Bachelor’s degree, it is safe to say Mike has been in the industry and with Blackman for 22 years!

How did you get started at Blackman?

Funny story, I had a friend who was working at Blackman Medford, NY in the warehouse. He knew I was unhappy with my current job. When the current “sweepy kids” were terminated because they decided to leave work while on the clock to go play video games. They result, he called me right away. The rest is history.

Do you have a mentor, if so who is that person and how do they help you?

Many people have helped shape my career at Blackman from Kevin Regan to Tony Piliero and Jane Donaghy. However, the one person who has had the most significant impact, who I considered my mentor is Ed Cuff, Branch Manager of Blackman Huntington Station, NY. Back in 2008, I was lucky enough to be afforded the opportunity to pursue my career at Blackman as an assistant manager at the Huntington location. It was there that Ed and I developed a great work relationship and a strong friendship. Ed has taken time every step of the way to teach and prepare me for my future endeavors with Blackman. Today, I continue to turn to him when looking for advice or profession guidance.

What is your favorite part about being a Branch Manager at Blackman?

Having a background in education, I enjoy developing the careers of my associates. Whether in the showroom, the counter or training a potential future manager, seeing others succeed is very rewarding.

What is the most significant lesson you have learned as a Branch Manager?

I guess the quick and easy answer would be that the customer is always right! I have learned how to make that work within a framework where all parties can feel satisfied. Furthermore, I have learned how to connect with my customers to better address their needs.

What is your favorite item we sell and why?

I am not sure I have one specific favorite item. I have a strong waterworks background from my time with Kevin Regan our Waterworks Division Manager. So I would say that underground waterworks would be my favorite category to sell.

Jim DePalma of Wales Darby Reviews the Fujitsu Contractor Portal

Fujitsu is known for their superior heating and cooling solutions. They offer a valuable online resource for contractors, installers and techs in the HVAC field, the Fujitsu Contractor Portal.

According to Jim DePalma, Fujitsu Contractor Trainer, their contractor portal is a comprehensive site sure to enhance any business. “There are a lot of reasons for professionals to set up a Fujitsu Contractor Portal page; I could go on and on. I have outlined five of the leading reasons why it’s a great place to register and learn more about Fujitsu’s product line.”

Below is Jim’s firsthand review highlighting the benefits of the Fujitsu Contractor Portal.

Fujitsu generates a tremendous amount of sales leads, and every contractor wants sales leads. Register on the portal to get your sales leads!

If a contractor does service work, the portal includes the service and installation manuals needed to troubleshoot Fujitsu systems. You can simply log on and download the manual you need.

This easy to use room-by-room load calculator allows a contractor to size the Fujitsu equipment. When you know the loads, you’ll have all the options available when selling a system to the homeowner.

There is a large selection of online training for contractors and techs. This information is worth viewing before installing a Fujitsu product. New hires can take “The Top 10 Installation Issues” training and know what to avoid. Thus preventing problems, so the job goes right the first time!

This is a great sales tool that compares the homeowner’s cost of fuel or electric from their current system and allows them to see the potential savings a Fujitsu system will provide on a yearly basis. It’s a very powerful sales tool.

Last Word:

“There are many more reasons to sign up for this portal,” Jim said. “By going to, contractors can locate tabs that can help explain a variety of things. Furthermore, they can learn what a heat pump is, how it works. They can learn what products are available from Fujitsu and how a multi-head Fujitsu system gives the homeowner zoning options. The learning opportunity is endless. It’s a great resource for all contractors.”

Get to Know the IFDA

Blackman Joins the IFDA Florida Chapter

Written By: Gwen Donovan

We are proud to announce that we have joined the Florida Chapter of the IFDA. IFDA stands for – International Furnishings and Design Association. This organization is a worldwide professional alliance of leaders from the residential and commercial furnishings and design fields. We were happy to meet several Florida Chapter members at our March 8 Blackman at Home magazine launch party held in our West Palm Beach showroom.

The launch party welcomed the IFDA Florida Chapter President Marsha Koch as well as Florida Chapter members Beverly Stewart, Lynn Sciarrone, Vicki Kirsner, Mike Peterson and Sylvia Wallace.

This professional network is a great way to meet other like-minded people in the design world. “I have found IFDA and its members to be welcoming and supportive,” Chapter President Marsha Koch said. “The connections I have made are invaluable, and members are my greatest resources. In the past year, I have done business with at least 12 of our chapter sponsors and members. I refer business to them at every opportunity.” Marsha’s firm, Picture Pretty Interiors, is located in Boca Raton.

The Florida Chapter of IFDA is a community of professionals representing all facets of the furnishings and design industries.  They provide opportunities for members to achieve their goals through education, collaboration, philanthropy and connections.  Members say it’s about the support they receive and relationships they build.

“In serving on the Chapter Board of Directors in various positions, and currently serving as President, my personal and professional skills have grown, and my connections have strengthened and expanded beyond expectations,” Marsha added. “Being part of this community has been an amazing experience.”

Founded in 1947, IFDA members are executives of companies that manufacture, distribute, design, write about or sell floor coverings, lighting, decorative fabrics, accessories and building products. Others are engaged in graphic, residential and contract design, education, publishing, licensing, marketing and communications. Through the IFDA Educational Foundation, this organization offers scholarships to students. They also offer grants to members as professionals working in the trade.  Student members are a vital part of the membership as well.

“We believe together we are better,” is the unofficial motto of the Florida Chapter, and that is right in line with Marsha’s feelings about membership: “I take advantage of our many educational, networking and community events we offer as often as possible. Every event is an opportunity!”

Vicki Kirsner, an interior designer with Infinity Designs LLC in West Palm Beach, is thrilled that Blackman has joined the Florida Chapter, saying “Blackman is a first class organization and we are so happy to be affiliated with you!”

Blackman Plumbing Supply and Dellon Sales Co. Support Puerto Rico Relief Effort

By Brent Brake, Dellon Sales Co.

Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Puerto Rico, home to almost 3.5 million Americans.

Those of us with personal ties to the island were shocked by the catastrophe Hurricane Maria left behind. It has been sobering and emotional.

Right after the hurricane, Blackman Plumbing Supply Wantagh and Dellon Sales Co. stepped up to the plate and set up a Puerto Rico donation site at the Wantagh location. We placed collection boxes at the counter and collected clothing, toys, shoes, books, and countless other supplies for the Americans in need. We also purchased pallets of bottled water to send to the island.

Mayor De Blasio stopped by our drop-off site to thank us for our involvement.

He handed me a beautiful note and wrote a message of love and support for Puerto Rico. “New York City will always be with Puerto Rico! We stand with you and for you! I am here to support you.” Signed Mayor De Blasio.

I know that the people of Puerto Rico appreciate everything that Blackman Plumbing Supply has done to support the recovery. I am thankful Blackman Plumbing Supply Wantagh rose to this challenge. I would like to thank Diana Desiderio and her Wantagh team for taking action and making a difference.
